Seminole Pro Tour, Atlanta Edition

This weekend we kicked off the 2010 Season with the opener at Mr. Cues II in Atlanta, Kelly and I drove up early on Friday to get settled in and check things out. Even though they touted that it was close to a full field they only ended up with 38 players, they said 20 or so players canceled at the last minute.

It was great to be there for Kelly’s first event and we had a great time talking to everyone as I tried to introduce him to all of the cool/top players in the event that he wanted to meet. He played very decently while keeping composure and even though he didn’t win any matches his motivation and focus is high, it was awesome to watch him handle the pressure well.

My tournament went a little better but not much, lost my first match to a kid who was playing in the biggest tournament of his life. Actually, twice during this trip my opponents told me that it was their 1st big tournament so they were very nervous and I’m starting to think it was to shark me. After that loss I played Jason Ritchko on the streaming table and got out to big lead since he was playing like poop, then I started missing and he picked up the pieces to make the race close. In the end I lucked out after hooking myself and kicking in the 10-ball out of turn, I felt bad but those are the rolls you have to take the good and the bad.

For some reason Wade Crane didn’t show up for our match so I won by forfeit which was a first for me, it’s an interesting feeling because while I am happy to win I wanted to play and possibly beat Mr. Crane since he is/was a great player. Well after such an easy match I got matched up with a very difficult one to even things out………had to play Corey Deuel. Lucky for me we played just after he lost a nail biter to Johnny Archer just minutes before so he wasn’t in the best mood, I took advantage of that and won 7-5 after being down 2-5. This match was great to win since it advanced me to the next day and into the money rounds, so of course we celebrated by getting hammered and going singing with friends till the wee hours of the morning.

Sunday we got up in time to pack up and head to the pool hall for the first match of the day where I normally don’t play very well, this time was different though and I actually won the match. My opponent said he got sharked by the tournament director since he was asked to remove his hat while playing, the TD didn’t say anything about his jeans and sneakers though so my opponent should be happy just having the hat mentioned. Before we began the match he said to me “You ever get the feeling like you don’t belong someplace?” and mentioned how nervous he was, judging by the Budweiser he was drinking I believed him to be very nervous being surrounded by top players in a pro event.

After that match was over it was back to the streaming table to face off with Tommy Kennedy once again, it seems that we meet in EVERY tournament we are both playing in. Our record is somewhat even but I think he might be up a set or two, we compete hard against each other but always have fun, respect each other’s game and the matches are always close. This match he played rather well and he won 4-8 missing only one ball I believe, two miscues and two scratches on the break didn’t help either.

Ended up finishing in 9th place which isn’t bad but not great, overall I played okay with flashes of brilliance and decent safety play.  Actually I was happy to finish kind of early since we still had 6.5 hours of driving ahead of us and Kelly has to drive another hour after dropping me off. Not to mention we were still a little fuzzy from the previous night’s festivities where we stayed out till 3am after munching on some Waffle House pork chops.

A decent weekend with old friends, some new friends and a little pool tournament thrown in the mix, if only they were all this much fun!!!

Lately

Well, lot’s of things ha ha. In follow up to the post on February 12th I will now be bringing the mini-lathe in to Bankshots every Sunday or whenever there is a decent sized tournament. Jeff asked me to do so and it went really well yesterday, did a good amount of work to make a little money and did clean-ups and tip reshaping for free in the hopes of future business.

It caused me to lose my first match I believe though since my mind was all over the place when I tried to play and I subsequently lost 6-7 to William who is a solid player, he played well and deserved the win. That started the long road on the “B” side on which I traveled from coast to coast ending with a break and run out with the score at 8-8 in the finals against David Grossman.  This is only the 3rd time I can remember winning this tournament after losing my 1st match, it’s pretty hard considering there were 51 or so players this week which makes for a long day.

Jeff announced that they are also going to be hosting a Saturday tournament to mirror the Sunday tournament, which bring in players from further away since they can play two added money events staying only overnight. It will bring down the numbers on Sunday but I think the new tournament will do well, I hope they get 40 players in each instead of the 50 like it is now. Lately it seems the room owners are trying to host more weekly events but nobody is adding the money like Jeff is adding money, it’s amazing that room owners can’t see past the “I’ll add money if we get a full field” mentality so it’s no surprise that people don’t show up to their events.

Had another lesson with Neil Rashba of Rashba Photography (www.rashba.com) today which went well and also have 3 other students this week. Two of them are new students and over the weekend I spent time talking to even more potential students which is GREAT, I never would have thought that lessons would be going so well and that this many people would want to be taught by me. It’s really the most rewarding thing ever   and it’s helping my game incredibly, I also just finished reading “The Mental Edge” by Kenneth Baum which came recommended by some great players. Since I’ve finished reading it I have won basically every tournament entered so I guess it works, if anything I feel very good about the process and confident in my pre-shot routine.

Can’t wait to hit the Seminole Tour in Atlanta later this month and kick off what hopes to be my best year yet, going with Kelly is going to be a great experience for both of us and I hope it brings his game to the next level!!

Derby City Classic 2010

Wow what a trip, it was 10 days of intensity and fun all rolled into one!! Great pool, great people, a great drive and of course great fun!!

The trip up:

Mitch Noble and I left early on Thursday morning and headed to the Nashville area to visit some of his family to deliver a couple of rocking chairs with some other items, the drive was immediately intense with HEAVY rain. We made it safely though and in good time, had dinner with his some of his family at a great little neighborhood restaurant then I headed off to JOB’s in Madison. It wasn’t 30 seconds after arriving that I ran into Grace Nakamura and another friend which was nice, the pool world is so small but I didn’t plan on running into anyone I knew  so quickly.

We spent some time the next day around downtown Nashville and roamed around looking at the sights and eating great food at Jack’s Bar-B-Q which was a famous local favorite. It was nice and cool up there and little did I know it was going to get MUCH cooler shortly, we were on the road shortly after lunch and walking around downtown for a bit. It wasn’t a long drive to Elizabeth Indiana and the drive was easy and we even went to a little “welcome center” place near the Ohio River dam which showed a lot about this history from the prehistoric era to the present which was great. We were the only two people there which was nice and we even paid the $4 to watch the short video about the area, to my surprise there were snow flurries flying around when we went to leave.

The tournament:

Wow what an event!! So many great players and huge turnout to boot, it was great to be a part of the crowd of players and see so many familiar faces. Saw some friends from long ago and made many new friends in the process, it was a constant time of shaking hands, telling stories and hanging out watching matches. I’m not a very social person normally but it’s hard not to watch matches with friends and just have an all around good time………oh and shoot some pool too ha ha.

We didn’t plan on playing the banks so we arrived late in the day and signed up for the one pocket and 9-ball events, in hindsight it was dumb to not play all of the events. It was great to watch the banks event since I have never seen it played at such a high level or by so many people, they had over 350 players!! Efren ended up losing in the finals to John Brumback in an epic battle where Mr. Brumback fired the last long rail bank in at light speed. Between the two they have won the event more times than anyone else in the last few years and for good reason, it’s amazing to see the control and imagination they have when coming up with shots.

The one pocket had 250+ players and I actually won 3 matches before losing to “The Weatherman” from Atlanta and Charlie Williams. It’s the first tournament I have ever played so cashing in it was awesome and I learned quite a bit from the experience, the two latter matches I won were against one pocket players and the last guy was a really good player so I am very proud to have beat him. As usual I didn’t play very well against Charlie Williams and got exactly half the balls/games needed to win the match, it’s hard playing against a ball pocketing machine.

In the 9-ball I won 2 matches before losing to Alex Pagulayan 6-7, in the hill-hill game I made 3 balls on the break and played a great safety and got the first open shot. Then I ran to the 8-ball with no issues and proceeded to super dog it by rattling the pocket leaving him an open table for the win. In hindsight I really should have taken more time shooting it but I was confident and felt good but that ended very quickly when the ball popped out of the pocket and my mouth fell open. I really should be mad about dogging it but I thought about it and realized that I hadn’t been competing much or successfully in the past few months so I am happy with how I played overall, sure I would have loved to win but there is always another event.

After that match Chris Szuter put me away with a combination of great shooting and favorable rolls, he was embarassed by the luck he was having but backed it up by not missing anything really so he steamrolled me 7-1. The days were long and as I had no ride back to the hotel I was staying in I had to hang around the event for 10-13 hours a day with no chance to rest, it took me two days to really recover from the tournament and 13 1/2 hour drive back home. Next year I will definitely have a car so I can take naps throughout the day before the next round begins, saving $70/day is great but not when you are walking around like a zombie and trying to compete that way.

The ride home:

It snowed for the last half of the trip and that meant we had to drive home in some of it, it was the first time I had really seen snow and definitely the first time I got to drive in it. Roderic and I took turns driving but I was the one lucky enough to get all of the snow to plow through, it was nerve racking especially since we were driving his nice shiny Civic and the last thing I wanted to do is play bumper cars with it. We made it home without any incidents though and had a great time conversing the whole trip, when the passenger wasn’t passed out of course we were both really tired and took turns napping/ driving.

We stopped a couple of times for gas and food which was great when we went to a place called Fazioli’s, it’s like fast Italian food which was tasty and affordable plus they didn’t give you 4 pounds of food which was nice. Roderic and I ate together quite a bit over the trip and had a great time together, he is a super nice guy with a great sense of humor and I’m glad we had a chance to get to become better friends this way. We might even go to a tournament or two in Atlanta in the future and he is lending me some books that I really want to read, I am lucky to have good friends like him.

Summary:

Overall it was a great trip though super expensive, having a car while there is paramount if you aren’t staying at the venue but paying $119/night is a little steep for my measly pocketbook. Even with sponsors helping me with entry fees and expenses I barely made it home, I brought a cue to sell just in case but wasn’t able to move it unfortunately. Spoke with Charlie Williams while eating with Stevie Moore about playing in the All Japan Championship later this year which he said he might be able to secure a spot for me, that would be a dream come true and will try my best to make it happen. Stevie and I spent a decent amount of time together too since he was my ride to and from the motel a few times since he was staying across the street, he is another great guy and superb player whom I feel lucky to have gotten to know bettter also.

Next year I will try to play all of the events and be more prepared for the different games, this year I was kind of unprepared since I was coming out of a little bout of depression and not playing the best the last few weeks. It was a great experience though and wouldn’t change a thing, there were more players and money than you can shake a stick at. It is said to be the best tournament to attend for the action and I believe it, there were some huge late night sets being played but I won’t delve into that since the Indiana Gaming Commission is not very happy about some of the happenings in The Action Report room.

Please feel free to ask any questions about the trip as I am sure I left out a whole bunch of crap, if you have the chance it’s a great event to attend and think ANYONE would benefit from playing in it!! Ciao for now!!

Derby City Classic, here I come!!

Just finished acquiring the needed sponsorship to hit up the DCC this year, I have never been and lately I haven’t been traveling so I am super stoked to be going. Lately I have been playing very unmotivated pool and not doing well in the local tournaments, focusing more on the job hunt and saving money so I haven’t been practicing either.

Now I am driven and excited as hell, just recently I was given free table time at Riggsy’s which is a nice little room owned by a great friend (Bobby Riggs) so I am going to be practicing there every day from now till I leave. This is so unexpected and very appreciated, I just met one of the sponsors last week but we clicked right away and it’s like we’ve been friends forever.

Going to be exercising and eating right till I leave too so that I will be light on my toes and feeling good about my stature, plus I will be clear in the head and in the game. Plus tomorrow I will be contacting a company so hopefully I will be back in the industry again shortly, this is an exciting week to say the least!!

Yesss!!!!!!

Weekend report, Art of Billiards in Gainesville

Let’s see let’s see, Friday I went to practice at Bankshots after picking John Ring up from work since he didn’t have his truck handy. Ran into a casual friend that initially wanted me to gamble with his boss since his boss loves to play pool, doesn’t play very well and has more money than he knows what to do with. As if that wasn’t enough good news he also introduced me to his immediate boss and we played a few games together while drinking some beer.

It seems that not only do they work in a group but they hang out and do many things socially together and they want to bring me into that group. They make a VERY good living selling Solar power equipment and service which my friend said he would recomment to his boss about hiring me onto the sales force. So what started as just running into a friend by coincidence ended up being a lead on a good score gambling and a potential position making fantastic money.  Sweet!!

Saturday I headed to the Top Hat’s tournament and I won that event undefeated, it was a small turnout but every little bit helps. Was supposed to go to the stip club for a friend’s bachelor party but didn’t want to spend any money so I ended up going to Butch and Sarah Croft’s house and jumping into the hot tub after eating a very juicy steak. They cook out quite a bit and I don’t know how I didn’t gain any weight this weekend, the food was so delicious and very plentiful!!

Sunday we began the early morning trek to Gainesville , okay it was like 10am but that’s pretty early for some of us,  to play the KF Cue Tour event at the Art of Billiards. It’s a very nice and clean little pool hall, Diamond tables with a full bar and focused on making players welcome. Art and Dana run it well and are very gracious hosts, it gets a little pricey there but it’s well worth it since they give back to people by hosting a variety of events for any level of player.

They got 33 players for the Open division and the day before they got 42 players in the Amateur event, when we walked in Mike Delawder and Matt B. from Daytona where playing the finals from the day before. Mike won the event and ended up being my first round matchup, we made a mistake though and played the whole match winner breaks instead of alternating the break like we were supposed to. He didn’t play that well in our match as I am sure he was tired and happy from winning the Amateur event, it’s his biggest win to date and it’s a nice payoff for the hard work he has been putting in for the last few months.

The next match my opponent played well and I lost 5-7, alternating breaks in this match proved to be a huge factor and it seems to level out the playing field pretty well. It puts  a lot of pressure on you to “hold” your break by not losing that game, it brings a certain taste of Tennis to the game which is interesting and some people don’t like this format. Anyways, I won the next 3 matches easily barely losing a game till I ran into Richie Richeson and our match went the full distance. He really did get some lucky rolls at the end but ultimately it was my fault I lost in the final game, I got out of shape as the rack progressed and scratched after making a nice jump shot leaving only 3 balls on the table.

To say he got lucky is the truth and that got me thinking, some people will find it funny and that it’s what everyone who loses says. But in all honesty a person who wins an event or even some matches will definitely have some good luck along the way, how much you attribute your winning or losing is what people have an issue with. We will all get good rolls and some bad ones too, timing plays a huge factor but you can’t deny that we will receive both positive and negative factors outside of our direct control. Love it or hate it, it’s part of the game so don’t act like it’s something new and that you didn’t see it coming. People laugh at me when I say “I got lucky” when reporting a win and I truly believe it, you can’t win a match without having some sort of good luck and I choose to recognize it.

Ended up finishing in 8th place I believe and was disappointed for sure, but I accepted my fate and opened my eyes to what I can improve on which is what is fueling my practice session for today. Am playing really well but of course it can be better, lately I have been working on something specific during my preshot routine and it’s paying off but like anything else worth doing it takes time to burn it into my brain to make it second nature. It’s nice to see progress with my game and teaching others really helps out a lot, tomorrow I have a new student and can’t wait to do what I can to help develop his game further.

On another positive note I received the sponsorship needed to attend the Seminole Tour finale at the Hard Rock Casino in Hollywood, Florida. Last year I made it to the final 4 on the winner’s side but lost the next two matches to finish in 5th place, if I could do that again I would be very happy since I know I am playing better and could possibly do better from that point. Either way I am thankful to have such great people supporting and believing in my game, without them I wouldn’t get very far in events or in life.

Off to Bankshots to get some practice in, need to iron out some issues on my break that the alternate breaking format this weekend revealed.

Seminole Pro Tour, Stroker’s Billiards in Palm Harbor

Just really getting up and back to the swing of things, for some reason the trip last night wore me out even though I’ve traversed it many times with no issues. Maybe it was all of the talking and playing that I did which is new for me, normally I don’t play mini tournaments nor talk to friends and hang out. It was a great time and need to do it more often when I can afford it, having fun gets expensive!!

Friday: I rolled in and got changed at the hotel before cruising to Stroker’s to see what was up, ended up playing a mini tournament since they didn’t get many players (37 to be exact) and I ended up winning that which was really cool. I wasn’t even going to play but Butch put me in an fed me mucho beer so we had a blast and even split the finals so it worked out perfectly…….thank you Butch!!

Saturday: Play started nice and early after I received a bye in the 1st round, beat John DiToro 7-2 then Trebor Braymore 7-0, played well and got decently lucky against Trevor since we normally have a battle on our hands. Went to the room and came back at 7pm to lose my match to Justin Hall, I didn’t play great and lost 6-8 which made me kind of angry since I didn’t make many errors but of course could have avoided those errors. Oh well, that’s what competing is for right?

Sunday: Played Jerry Calderon and lost 6-8 which again I played decently but not great, we always have a close match and this was no exception. There were very few mistakes made but of course indicated by the score I made just one more mistake than I should have. Bleh!! Hung around for a bit talking to Turk and ended up having a great conversation about reading material, ego, personalities, people and future plans. It’s always nice to find someone you genuinely enjoy sharing a conversation with and we found out we even read some of the same books. That reminds me, need to do some research and send some info to him.

Even though there were only 37 players the field was stacked, Marlon won the event but there were 12-15 real threats to win. I was very surprised to see the lack of players considering it’s right before the US Open but then again that may be the exact reason there weren’t many entries this weekend. Who knows, I was hoping for a jam packed tournament full of talent with great matches and I wasn’t disappointed but there were definitely not as many players as expected.

Even got to do some commentary with Matt Highsmith from www.cuesportsvideo.com which was very enjoyable, need to send him some stuff too man I need to write this down!! Went to eat with James Roberts, Donnie Mills and their girls as I sat there like a 5th wheel Saturday night, we had a great time and shared many laughs which is always good for the soul. Need to get some practice in this week and see if I can drum up some sponsorship for the US Open, haven’t been successful so far but you never know!!

Another fun Tuesday and it’s not over yet!!

At home cooking some corned beef hash with onions and corn to throw on some rice after splitting the little weekly Park Ave. tournament, tonight they had 17 players so the split was only $75 but it only took 5 hours. Am also watching “House” on www.hulu.com which I love, yes love, the show teaches you so many things but the part I love most is the psychological/ human behavior aspect.

The tournament was fun even if it was smaller than we would like, ended up splitting it with Smoking Joe in the finals since he had a job to finish (he cleans businesses at night) and didn’t want to play too late. William V. has been shooting really well and on the case game should have run out but dogged the 8-ball and conceded the match. Come to think of it almost everyone is playing better pool these days and there are a lot of people practicing/ getting lessons to improve their game, this is a wonderful thing as I think good competition is good for everyone. They also have new felt on a couple of tables at Park Ave. and actually bought “measle” cueballs for all of the racks which makes a huge difference, thank you Martin we really appreciate it!!

Another nice thing is that it was nice and cool outside, a nice 68 degrees if the little number in the dashboard was correct. Lately my car has been smoking a little and you could smell oil burning when sitting at a red light, “oh no!!” I said to myself as I thought it would mean a costly repair. But to my delight I realized today that the oil was hitting the exhaust manifold only because I forgot to put the oil cap back on the engine on Sunday……crisis averted.

Today I wore a hat all day and realized that not only do I look goofy in one but it also drives me bonkers, my head would get hot/ itchy and every few minutes I would take it off and reset it on my head. How anyone shoots pool with one on is beyond me, more power to the person that can see anything and not be distracted by the limited view causing more head movement. Besides, it makes my face look fatter and that’s not the look I am going for, earlier today an old guy at the pool hall announced “man you’re getting fat!!”………thanks buddy.

Today there was also an Earthquake in Samoa that registered 8.0 approximately 7.4 miles beneath the surface……..say what?!??! How in the world do you figure that one out? After hearing that I was worried about Hawaii being hit with a Tsunami but there was no real threat of that happening I found out later, just in case I called my Mom to make sure she heard of what was happening and to be prepared. They said there were 3 waves generated with the highest being 5.1 feet but they didn’t report on where it hit or what damage it did, the death toll is less than 20 thankfully.

Have two lessons scheduled for tomorrow with Charles V. and Mr. Strout, after that I’m going to cruise by the Orange Park Kennel Club to support my good friend Joey . Not going to play this time but will be there for moral support and to watch how grownups play poker, plus drink a few beers supplied by Mr. Joey. His poker game is like my pool game and we constantly talk about our respective games as if they were one in the same, it’s kind of cool to see the parallel in physical and mental aspects of it in addition to how we handle adversity while competing. There is much to learn from any situation if you look for it………we do.

Weekend report

Ahhhh, full and happy. Just got done eating some ramen with green onions and spam thrown in along with a tuna salad sandwich and some chips. Sure it’s a lot of food for so late at night but I didn’t eat much all day since I wanted to come home to make what I just listed and it was all that I wanted it to be!!!

Played the Bankshots tournament today and even though it was a small tournament it still felt really good to win it. Beat Bobby Hicks in the finals and I felt that I played strongly throughout the day, there were a couple of matches where I only missed a ball or two in a race to 7.

Yesterday there was an even smaller tournament at Park Ave. with a $25 entry, normally it’s only $10 so the added expense chased a lot of players out so only 11 played. Finished 2nd to Grossman after losing 5-7 in the finals, at 5-5 he slopped in the 1-ball, 5-ball and after a couple of safeties the 6-ball………..that’s right 3 slop shots in one game to get to the hill. At first I wasn’t even going to play since they only had 10 players but the manager said the owner would pitch in $100 to the pot if I stayed to play, so for the benefit of everyone playing I stayed so that they would add the extra cash.

Between matches I saw that they were making flyers for their once a month tournament and made a suggestion, they listed the added money as “$300 with 32 players” which to me was not good. Since I knew they would add some money if they got more than 16 I told them to list it as “$150 added GUARANTEED!!”, to me it would attract more players and if they got 32 they could add even more money to the delight of the players. I hope it works out as they need the business and obviously want tournament players to show up, they even made the investment of getting all “measle” cueballs for the tables and got rid of the very light and sometimes smaller “red circle” cueballs.

All in all it was a good weekend and even got a couple of lessons scheduled for this week, it’s nice to be back that week in Galveston was as tiring as it was fruitful. Next weekend at Bankshots they are going to have Tony Crosby and the KF Cue Tour event and the weekend after that I am going to Spring Hill for the last stop of the Seminole Pro Tour at Capone’s. Would be nice to win either event and I feel like I have a legitimate chance at both but only time will tell, having the home court advantage has proven itself in the past and I am hungry to win another decent event.

Wish me luck, I am trying as hard as I can to play well and help Jacksonville play better pool one player at a time!!

Galveston, September 12th-20th 2009….part 1

Today is the 23rd and the first day that I feel normal since I got back on Sunday, it was quite a long trip and my body did not handle it well. The thing that affected me the most was the lack of good sleep, since Galveston is mosquito heaven they were obviously everywhere including in your room in the middle of the night.

Several nights I woke up slapping an arm or leg and not being able to go back to sleep, those little buggers were everywhere even hours after being in your room without opening a door or window. It’s bad enough when you are outside but you figure you would be safe in your room after killing the ones that follow you in, but somehow they get in and feast on you for dessert.

Anyways, getting a full night’s sleep was impossible and the last day I was there I had to get up at 5am to make the flight so I only got about 3 hours of sleep which made things worse. The way I planned the flight was that I would get back in time to play the usual Bankshot’s Sunday tournament, what I didn’t plan on is getting like zero sleep and waking up before the crack of dawn. Though I came back with high hopes and a smile I didn’t do very well in the tournament and came home to slumber rather early and for a very long time.

This is getting pretty long and there is a ton to write so I will call this “part 1″ so that I can sleep and continue tomorrow, it was a great event for me and I don’t want to rush or miss anything in the writing of it. To tell you the truth I don’t even know who reads this or if they care but it feels good to write it out sometimes and it’s fun, if anything it’s a good way to get some good mental exercise and carpal tunnel syndrome ha ha. Good night people, part 1 is a wrap!!

Paypal button and Galveston match link

Someone suggested that I get one of these to make things easier for sponsorship and such, there is one on my website so please email me for details. Am cashing at almost every event and will carry over any won funds to the smaller tournaments so that a return is almost guaranteed. Trying to work up funds to go to the US Open next month, really starting to pick up some momentum with my game and can’t wait to play!!

Button is on the bottom right hand corner of this and every page I believe: www.neilfujiwara.com

Also here is a link to the Shane Van Boening/ Francisco Bustamante match in Galveston, they are racing to 9 in 10-ball and it’s a great match. Nick Varner and I had a great time in the commentary booth he is so easy to work with and everyone loves listening to him, it was flattering to work with him!!

Any feedback (good and bad) will be much appreciated as I will be doing more commentary in the future for different events and I want to be someone that people like listening to. Thank you for taking the time to watch and make comments, fire away!
